As 5G networks continue to evolve, API monetization has emerged as a critical strategy for unlocking new revenue streams and enhancing network capabilities. By exposing features like Quality of Service (QoS), location intelligence, authentication and edge computing through APIs, telecom operators are creating new business opportunities, fostering developer ecosystems, and improving customer experiences.
Recently, industry leaders from AT&T and Rakuten Symphony came together to explore how telecom carriers can leverage APIs to drive profitability. The session, moderated by Abe Nejad, Publisher of Network Media Group (NMG), covered the challenges and opportunities in API monetization.

The discussion highlighted that while APIs are a fundamental part of modern technology, the real opportunity for telecom operators lies in how they package and commercialize their unique network capabilities. Simply offering APIs is not enough; carriers must rethink how they make these services accessible and valuable to developers and businesses.
One of the key challenges raised was fragmentation within the telecom ecosystem. The presence of multiple players and varying standards makes seamless API integration complex. While standardization efforts continue, meaningful progress depends on operators embracing openness and deeper collaboration with other industries, including hyperscalers and over-the-top (OTT) service providers.
Another critical theme was the importance of developer engagement. Industries like fintech and cloud computing have successfully built thriving developer ecosystems by prioritizing ease of use, clear documentation and frictionless integration. Telecom operators need to adopt a similar approach to make network APIs more accessible and drive adoption among businesses.
Cross-industry collaboration was also seen as an untapped opportunity. Telecom providers hold vast amounts of valuable network data that could be monetized beyond traditional connectivity. A compelling example discussed was using telecom data for credit scoring in emerging markets, allowing financial institutions to assess creditworthiness based on mobile usage patterns. These kinds of services could open new revenue streams while providing significant societal benefits.
Looking ahead, the transition to 5G Advanced and 6G is expected to create even more opportunities for API monetization. However, the consensus was that telecom operators must act now to establish strong API ecosystems before new technologies introduce additional complexity. Without proactive leadership, there is a risk that external players will step in and dominate the space, much like OTT providers did in the past.
“We are pioneers in ecosystem play … We believe that the true realization of Open RAN and Open APIs will become more tangible as real business and application use cases emerge with 5G Advanced and 6G.”
